Most of us have eaten our share of Thai food, but for many, we haven’t experienced Isaan food which although similar to traditional Thai food, originates from the Thailand/Laos border and is a blend of the two cuisines. A new venue, Isann Thai and Lao Restuarant is bringing this combination to Hobart.
Opened by Auntie Noi and Auntie Layvanh, these two grew up in the Isaan area.
The team at Isaan Thai & Laos know that many people have an expectation of how Thai food should taste. They have ensured that the food carries many of the same flavours you would expect from Thai food with a balance of salty, sweet and spicy.
When the Hello Hobart team headed in, we picked a little something from each side of the menu that offers up traditional dishes such as Larb, a spicy minced meat salad, along with popular dishes like Pad Thai. Signature dishes also include Tom Tam Thai, a sweet and sour dish with green papaya, vegetables and peanuts with palm sugar and lime dressing. These brightly coloured meals were exactly what we expected and more.

Isaan Thai & Laos restaurant is located in Salamanca Square (next to San Churro) and open Tuesday through Sunday for both lunch and dinner.
