If youâve ever wandered down a certain laneway in Hobart and caught the irresistible scent of something crispy or spotted someone sipping a delicious-looking drink, chances are youâve stumbled upon Happy Larry.
In just one year, this little cafĂ© has become a bit of a local legend. Theyâve dished up over 8,000 schnitty sangas (yes, really), built a loyal following for their strawberry matcha lattes, and introduced Hobart to the Crookie a croissant-cookie mash-up… ouf. It’s as indulgent as it sounds.
Theyâre throwing a big birthday bash to celebrate. This coming Friday and Saturday they’ll be handing out a free iced strawberry matcha with any sandwich purchase, and if your nameâs Larry, lunch is on the house!! (More details here)
We caught up with Varun, co-owner of Happy Larry, to chat about the cafĂ©âs first birthday and the story behind the beloved go-to.
It all started with a simple idea and a serious love for sandwiches.
First things first, congrats on one year! How does it feel to hit this milestone?
“Thank you! It feels amazing to hit this milestone. It’s been a year of learning, growing, and serving up delicious food and drinks to a community that really embraces its local small businesses. Weâre proud of what weâve achieved and are excited for whatâs ahead!”
Happy Larry has become a staple in Hobart in just under a year, what was the inspiration to opening a café?
“After the success of our first venue in Hobart, Farzi, we wanted to bring something bold and fun to the Hobart CBD.
We love sandwiches and in our travels were inspired by some incredible venues on the mainland like Hector’s and Nico’s, and that passion drew us to opening something of our own in the CBD.
It’s now become a great space not only for some of the best sangas, but also our unique croissants, trendy drinks like iced matchas and of course, specialty coffee.
With the name Happy Larry – we took inspiration from the expression ‘Happy as Larry’. There are positive, fun vibes presented with ‘Happy Larry’, who in our mind, is always up for a good time, ready to make your day a little brighter.”
How would you describe the style of food you serve here? Any particular influences?
“Delicious, classic sandwiches delivered with a bit of a modern twist. We love experimenting with different flavours with our pastries like Dubai Chocolate Croissants, Crookies (a croissant/cookie mash-up) and drinks too, like iced strawberry matcha, pistachio matcha etc.”

What do you love most about the neighbourhood now that youâre part of it?
“We chose to open Happy Larry in Hobart’s CBD because itâs the perfect mix of hustle and chill. Weâre right in the heart of all the action, surrounded by locals, students, and tourists. We love the laneway vibe and how the venue is tucked away from the main streets of the city but is still full of energy.”
What do you think gives Happy Larry its edge in Hobartâs cafĂ© scene?
“What sets Happy Larry apart is our unapologetic commitment to flavour. We arenât afraid to be a little daring with our sandwiches and drinks. Our customers know theyâll get something fresh, delicious, and unique every time they visit.”

It’s lunchtime. What sandwich are your reaching for?
“That’s a tough one, as I am loving the slow cooked Beef Brisket and also love the classic Reuben but, Iâm all about the Schnitty! Itâs crispy, tender, and packed with flavour, everything you want in a sandwich. Itâs the perfect combo of hearty and satisfying.”
Any pro tips for making an iconic sandwich?
“A truly great sandwich is all about balance. The right mix of textures, flavours, and freshness is key. Itâs not just about the fillings but also the bread, everything should come together in perfect harmony. And, of course, quality ingredients make all the difference.”
You’ve clearly tapped into a passion here of hospitality. What is it about running a cafe that does it for you?
“The best part of running Happy Larry is the connection with people, our amazing community of customers and staff. Itâs so rewarding to see people enjoying our food and drinks, whether theyâre regulars or first-timers. I also love how dynamic each day is, thereâs always something new to tackle and learn.”

What role does community play in the success of Happy Larry?
Are there any partnerships or collaborations that have been key to your journey?
“The Hobart community has been incredibly supportive. Theyâve welcomed us with open arms and helped spread the word, whether through word-of-mouth or sharing their experiences on social media. One of the most memorable moments has been seeing people return week after week, and hearing how much they love what we do. Itâs these little moments that make all the hard work worth it.
Weâve been lucky to collaborate with some amazing local suppliers and businesses. Itâs all about supporting each other and building up the local scene. We’ve collaborated with businesses like Sip & Style Co, Sanctum Boutique accommodation, Six Russell Bakes, Pigeon Whole Bakers, Baked Gluten Free, Brewlab and more!”
What’s next for Happy Larry?
“Weâre always thinking ahead! More tasty creations, more collaborations, and definitely more love for the Hobart food scene. I see Happy Larry continuing to grow and evolve, and weâll keep playing an active role in supporting local businesses and keeping Hobartâs cafĂ© scene fresh, fun, and flavourful.”
