A Hobart Icon Returns

Serving up Greek classics like gyros, baklava, Greek-style snack packs, galaktoboureko and the crowd pleaser – souvlaki. Parthenon has been bringing Mediterranean flavours to Hobartians since the ’80s!

For many Hobartians, Greek food is more than just a quick takeaway. Parthenon is a name that carries nostalgia, memories of late‑night feeds after a night out, a Parthenon souv hits different.

From Sydney to Souvlaki

Many Hobart locals may recognise the name Parthenon from back in the day. The Lambrakis’ revived the brand when they reopened the first franchise in Moonah in 2023, where longtime local Prashant began working behind the grill.

Prashant then took the leap when asked to manage the third business in the franchise when they opened up in Wellington Court. Having moved to Hobart from Parramatta, Sydney, in 2020, where he learned the craft while working in a small Greek takeaway an experience that sparked his love for Greek cuisine, the go‑to comfort food that doesn’t need reinventing, just respecting.

“People already know the name,” he says. “Locals recognise it straight away they’re already used to Parthenon. People come in and say, ‘Oh, I remember this place’.

That sense of familiarity has been key. For many customers, walking through the door feels like reconnecting with a piece of Hobart’s food history.

“It’s been a really good comeback.”

Fresh and local

Parthenon serves lunch and dinner seven days a week, from 10 am to 7.30 pm, with hearty platters and open plates that are perfect for a proper sit‑down meal or a quick bite between errands or on your lunch break.

“My food is all fresh,” Prashant says. “I source my supplies from local Tasmanian producers, and I prepare all the meats myself. I’m here from 7 am every morning doing prep before we open.”

The Open Souvlaki Twist

The menu celebrates the classics, with its standout meal being the open souvlaki. Served on a plate, it features fresh bread, meat, salad, chips and sauce. Packed with flavour, it’s a street‑food staple that represents everything Greek food does best: fresh ingredients, bold seasoning and food that brings people together.

“I like to add my own twist and spice things up,” Prashant says.

What exactly is the twist? You’ll just have to try one to find out.
