A joyful Maloya music and dance experience for kids

Join Salama, the vibrant international ensemble behind Island Rhapsodies, for an exciting, hands-on experience created especially for children.

In this interactive event, kids will explore the joyful rhythms, songs and movements of Maloya — a powerful music and dance genre from Réunion Island in the Indian Ocean. Maloya is now celebrated as a symbol of freedom, identity, and cultural pride. In 2009, it was recognised by UNESCO as part of the world's intangible cultural heritage.

Children will learn two or three Maloya songs using call-and-response singing, expressive movement, and simple rhythms through playful, age-appropriate instruction. They'll experiment with traditional percussion instruments like the kayamb and roulèr, feeling the heartbeat of the music.

This fun, culturally rich session ends with a vibrant mini-performance where the kids join Salama, singing and dancing in a joyful celebration of rhythm and community.

Salama is a collective of Indian Ocean and international artists who blend traditional and modern rhythms to share stories of joy, nostalgia, and resilience. They're proud to pioneer the sharing of Maloya in Australia — and this is a rare opportunity for young people to experience the music, stories and spirit of this magical tradition.

Perfect for kids aged 6+, this unique cultural experience will leave children uplifted, inspired, and moving to the beat of something truly special.
