It’s not easy being green, but it’s Plastic-Free July! Making it the perfect time to start embracing sustainable practices and discover ways to reduce the amount of plastic in your day-to-day life. 🚯🌱🐢
It doesn’t have to be perfect, and luckily for us, Hobart is home to a flourishing community of eco-warriors helping educate us on fighting the war on waste. ♻️🍃🌍
Here are five places making it easier to be green, and reduce single-use plastics from your life this #plasticfreejuly
There’s nothing more Hobartian than getting up early on a Sunday morning with your wicker basket and heading down to Farmy, where Bathurst Street transforms into a bustling farmers market. Get your fresh fruit, veg, and loaves of bread free of plastic! From fresh Tasmanian Juice Press juices, where you get a sneaky discount when you return your glass bottles, to filling up your basket with Soyoyoy Foods products in plastic-free compostable packaging, going green at Farmy has never been easier!
🥬 Eumarrah
Hobart’s own natural & organic wholefoods store encourages minimal-waste shopping! They offer plastic-free fruit and veg boxes on order (with weekly recipe cards and local produce info), provide a bulk refill section for dried essentials, household and hygiene items, loose leaf teas, chocolates, sweets, spices, and deli items. You can BYO containers or use one of their donated jars.
🍃 Teros
Your one-stop shop for all things plastic-free, Fair Trade, eco-conscious, and Tasmanian-made! Here you’ll find eco swaps such as beeswax wraps, silicone food covers, keep cups (Frank Green girlies unite!), and more!
In the heart of South Hobart, you’ll find a sustainable grocer and coffee shop dedicated to promoting low-waste and organic living. They offer bulk and fresh Tasmanian wholefoods and produce. Grab a cuppa from their cafe and get your self-serve milk and/or honey on tap (BYO bottle), bulk coffee beans, and over 180 other bulk goods.
One man’s trash is another man’s treasure! The SoHo Tippy is the holy grail of pre-loved goodies to help reduce your plastic consumption, from reusable containers and rescued electronics to clothing, books, vinyl, toys, and a variety of household appliances. Shopping at the tippy helps skip the plastic and prevents items from ending up in landfill.
For Plastic Free July, they’re hosting their annual “Art From Trash” exhibition opening tonight at Salamanca Arts Centre at 6 pm. Showcasing art made from discarded materials. Tickets are available here.
