Is there anything better than a crackling fire and a good drink on a chilly Hobart evening? We think not.

Whether you’re chasing a hearty meal, a cheeky cocktail, or just a snug corner to thaw out in, Hobart has a delightful collection of venues where the fireplaces are glowing and the vibes are just right.

So swap the trackies for something a little more outing-worthy and treat yourself to a winter warmer at one of these charming spots. From historic taverns to stylish newcomers, here’s your guide to some of the cosiest spots in town.

 Shipwrights Arms or ‘Shippies’

A true Battery Point treasure, Shippies has been part of the community for over 175 years. Freshly renovated, it now features a fireplace crafted from an old ship’s boiler—yes, really. It’s history, warmth, and character all rolled into one.

 Leoht

New to Battery Point, Leoht is a stylish café with a fireplace that sits proudly in the centre of the room. It’s the perfect place to settle in with a cuppa or a leisurely lunch while the fire does its thing.

 The Whaler

Burger, beer, and a blazing fire, I mean what more could you want? The Whaler in Salamanca is snug and inviting, with a fire that’s perfect for warming up after a brisk walk along the waterfront.

 Jack Greene

An old favourite, in the heart of Salamanca. A dimly lit, European inspired tavern with a fireplace tucked upstairs. It’s a comfy cosy spot with leather couches and bookshelves lining the walls and is open to the wee hours of the morn.

 The Den

A stylish retreat with a modern twist, The Den offers a sophisticated setting to sip and socialise. Their fireplace adds a touch of warmth to the sleek interior.

 Customs House Hotel

Right on the waterfront and steeped in history, Customs House serves up classic pub fare with a side of warmth. Their restaurant fireplace is ideal for lingering over a schnitty and schooner.

 Hope and Anchor Hotel

Awarded Australia’s oldest continuously licensed pub, dating back to 1807, the Hope and Anchor is a living museum of sorts. Amongst the vintage rifles and mounted deer heads, you’ll find a fireplace that completes the old-world charm.

 New Sydney Hotel

This one’s a showstopper, an icon in itself. The New Sydney’s fireplace sits front and centre, right by the bar, and it’s a beauty. Bonus points for the communal marshmallow bowl – grab a skewer and toast away.

 Shamrock Hotel

A Hobart institution with a bustling vibe and hearty pub meals. The front bar features a roaring woodfire, perfect for defrosting. And yes, Crazy Parmi Wednesday is still a thing, Looney Tuna anyone?

 Novellino Eatery

Timber floors, art deco lighting, and a glowing fireplace set the scene at Novellino. It’s a blend of Tasmanian produce and Italian soul, served with a side of elegance.

 Grinners Dive Bar

Midtown’s Mexican gem, known for their spicy margs, tasty tacos and jalapeño poppers, Grinners is an all-round good time. If the spicy marg doesn’t warm you enough, head up the stairs to get cosy by their open fireplace (I’m told there is even two…).

 Simple Cider

Back open on Fridays and Saturdays, Simple Cider on Elizabeth Street offers one of the best mulled ciders in town. Their cosy fire kicks off from 4pm, perfect for easing into the weekend.

 Boodle Beasley

Heading North Hobart way? Boodle Beasley has a tucked-away fireplace near the backyard door. Pair it with a bao and a glass of red, and you’ve got yourself a winning winter combo.

 Fern Tree Tavern

Surely the cosiest spot on kunanyi? With Twin Peaks vibes, a roaring fireplace, mulled wine, and a 2-for-1 parmi deal on Sundays, it’s hard to beat.

 Longley International Hotel

A Sunday roast, live music, and a fireside seat – Longley International Hotel is the ideal spot to wind down and recharge before the week ahead.

Whether you’re a local or just passing through, Hobart’s winter charm is waiting for you!

So go on – find your fire.
