Tucked away on Criterion Street in Hobart is Bruce, a hidden gem for the city’s fashionistas.
Em and Dan are the owners of Bruce, a luxury store that stocks pre-loved designer items, for men and women. Think Prada. Think Max Mara. Think Issey Miyake.
They founded Bruce in 2009 and already operate two stores in Melbourne, only recently heading south to open their third store here in Hobart, bringing with them a treasure trove of vintage and designer pre-loved items.
“Bruce is a consignment store, a style of shopping more commonly found in Em’s hometown of New York City,” says Dan.
The couple were keen to bring a touch of New York to Dan’s hometown of Hobart.
Bruce stocks an ever-changing showcase of US, European, Japanese and Australian contemporary labels that includes a large collection of clothing, shoes and accessories. You are bound to find something unique and special to add to your wardrobe, making Bruce a destination point next time you are in town.
“Labels you’ll find at Bruce include Prada, Ganni, Frame, Max Mara, Rixo, Bassike, Scanlan Theodore, Issey Miyake, Essentiel Antwerp, Comme des Garçons and many more,” says Dan.
Customers are also encouraged to bring in their own designer items. If you have a few fashion favourites in your wardrobe suffering from a lack of attention, now might be the time to hand them over to a new owner.
“Clients get paid as items sell,” says Dan. “The standard split is 50/50, but splits for luxury handbags can be negotiated.”
The aesthetics of their store on Criterion Street are beautifully minimal. Once inside you feel like you could be in Paris, New York or London.
Bruce is open seven days a week and is found at 29 Criterion Street, opposite Criterion Street Café.
