A little Hobart secret is the quirky Spacebar Gallery. Supporting 26 makers and producers, this space is full of unique handmade pieces perfect for treating yourself or for a cute gift to make someone’s day.
“The art and pieces here are like a dessert for me,” says delightful owner Lorena
You will discover something fun and quirky in every corner of this store. From beeswax wraps by Sustomi, handmade clothing from Pony Black, rings made from repurposed spoons by Spoon Savvy and funky homewares from MUCHIMO.
“It is so hard to choose a favourite piece. I do have a number of the Chris Wright ceramics at home though because I love his work. I also adore many of Melly’s jewellery pieces.”
Spacebar Gallery has been pleasing tourists and locals alike since 2010, with owners Lorena and Milly joining three years ago. Like many other businesses, they closed their doors due to the pandemic, but these ladies were still feeling the love from customers.
Lorena tells us that Milly will be moving on from the business to focus on her art, a passion she rediscovered throughout the pandemic. But don’t fear, these two are still close and Milly’s work can still be found at the store.
This store supports emerging and established artists and we can see why people fall in love with this hidden gem.
And the name? Well it refers to expressions and what the spacebar represents with regards to leaving ideas for an idea. Simple and we love it.
Spacebar Gallery is located in Salamanca Arts Centre (best entrance is from Wooby’s Lane).
“We often would come in to messages left on the phone from customers saying they missed us and asking when we would reopen. It was very sweet”
