Early this year (just prior to the pandemic craziness), Mr. Good Guy welcomed new head chef Kam, hailing from Melbourne after coming from acclaimed restaurants such as Dandelion, BangPop and Rock Sugar.
Now that they we are allowed out again, we went along to finally meet Kam, chat about what to expect from the fresh new menu and try out a few of the dishes.
Located ground level of the ibis Styles Hobart on Macquarie Street, Mr Good Guy Bar + Asian Kitchen is worth a visit to see the funky interior space alone. Coupled with the new incredible menu, we are recommending it as a ‘must-try’ now we are allowed out again.
For those of you who haven’t had the pleasure of eating at Mr Good Guy, it is a mix of Thai, Vietnamese and Cambodian street food. A little bit of Chinese cuisine is also mixed in with the seasonal menu.
Kam has brought with him a wealth of knowledge from travelling to a variety of South Asian countries, trying street food and bringing back these flavours and incorporating them into the menu.
“You learn a lot from travelling, you can learn so much from the traditional ways an old lady might cook up a pad thai in the streets of Thailand”
For vegetarians, you will be impressed with the number of plant-based meals on the new menu. ‘We wanted to create a menu that had an explosion of flavour where vegetables are the hero. We also offer an entirely vegetarian banquet option’.
The Hello Hobart team would describe the menu as ‘user-friendly’, and Kam’s influence has really brought in a modern/Melbourne vibe to the restaurant.
The menu is designed for sharing, which in light of the current distancing rules, is a little tough but their front-of-house staff are well-trained to adjust dishes to suit numbers for sharing safely.
The menu offers a wide variety of gluten free options and as Kam said, most menu items can go from ‘zero to hero’ with regards to spice level!
Fun fact, the colourful chopstick holders which are synonymous with Mr Good Guy are all named Kevin.
They are currently offering seating of up to 40 people with bookings essential, give the team a call. They are still offering a takeaway option, with a drop-off service available to your car from the hotel driveway.
Located within the Ibis Hotel, 173 Macquarie Street, Hobart.
