Sandy Bay is Hobart’s coastal gem that blends beachside with boutique shopping and foodie heaven.

Home to some of Hobart’s most loved beaches, the main university of Tasmania campus, and the iconic Wrest Point Casino. This sunny suburb is a little unsung hero when it comes to fine dining and retail therapy.

But First, Coffee

Our first stop is a must-visit on everyone’s list, tourists and locals alike.

Start your day off right with a pastry and coffee by the locally renowned Six Russell Bakes

This bakery by day, bistro by night, has a cult following, and it’s easy to see why. From the masterminds behind Dier Makr and Me Wah, Six Russells is whipping up fresh focaccias, handmade sourdough, crispy croissants and other seasonal pastries.

Shop Small, Shop Local

Speaking of tasty, the candles around the corner at Soyu Candles look (and smell) good enough to eat!

This hidden gem is home to the cutest candles that are handcrafted, hand-painted and poured in Tasmania. From fairy bread to croissants, they’ve got candles in every shape and size you can think of, perfect for gifts or even to treat yourself.

A short stroll up the main street, you will find several local loves, such as Wildly Abigail Florist, who stocks seasonal and wild flowers, locally crafted art and bespoke homewares.

Whether you’re searching for the perfect gift or a piece to brighten your home, Grey and Felt houses an ever-evolving collection to suit everyone’s homeware needs. Stocking brands we all know and love like Marimekko, Maison Balzac, Littala and Normann Copenhagen – they’re your one-stop shop for boutique homewares.

Brunch Time

It’s time to refuel, and we know just the spot!

Brunch is what Sisterhood do best (did someone say mimosas?) as they serve brunch all day long. Known for their bottomless brunch, these guys are an institution in Sandy Bay, as well as being one of the most Instagram-able cafes in Hobart. Think loaded avo toast with feta and dukkah, crispy halloumi stacks, Korean fried chicken burger or the classic ‘eggs your way’.

If that’s not your vibe, head on down to Giddy Up Foodstore, a little hidden diamond in the rough when it comes to the brunch scene in Hobart. Soon to drop their summer menu featuring the Rain-bowl, Black ’n Pink chicken waffle, slow-cooked One Piece beef short rib, and a cheeky Roast Pumpkin Bowl for the veggie lovers. They’ve got it all!

Life’s a Beach

The iconic location of the Dark Mofo nude solstice swim, Long beach Reserve is the perfect spot to view the coastline for a morning jog, a family picnic, or simply soaking up the views of the River Derwent. Weather-dependent (or not if you’re freaky like that), it’s the local waterhole for a dip or a swim out to the pontoon.

While you’re in the area, why not check out the Hobart Twilight Market, running on select Fridays from 4.30  – 9 pm between October and March. The next market is on 5 December!  Enjoy live music from local talent and indulge in Tasmania’s finest quality products. Their market is home to a diverse range of food and locally-crafted small batch drinks, as well as an array of design stalls. Get amongst it and soak up the atmosphere of Sandy Bay’s finest local market.

Dinner Deals

Back to the main strip, it’s dinner time! Look no further than The Mayfair Bar and Bottle Shop, who host Trivia Mondays, Tunes Tuesday (live music), Wings Wednesday, Friday 2 for 1 cocktails and live music on Saturdays. They also have ‘cocktail of the week’ specials with a rotating menu of tipples for you to enjoy. Their burger lineup is legendary, with icons like The Big Bacon Burger and the pulled pork burger being crowd faves. Or they have a whole other vegan menu for the vegos, it’s giving Maccas Big Mac, but made vegan!

If Trivia isn’t your strong point, head on down to The Metz who are known for their Pasta & Pinot nights on Wednesdays and their Half-price pizzas every Monday & Tuesday from 5 pm! Get comfy in their outdoor dining area in the sun or inside by the fire when it’s cold. No matter what the occasion, make it The Metz.

Support Sandy Bay’s vibrant local businesses and enjoy a unique day out in one of Hobart’s and most charming suburbs, rich with beach vibes and cosmopolitan charm.
