Long before home gyms were trending and fitness apps were a thing, Health & Leisure Hobart was already helping Tasmanians move more and feel stronger, be it at home, in the gym, or in a club sport.

Founded back in 1992, this proudly Tasmanian, family‑owned business has quietly become one of Hobart’s true fitness backbones. Their mission has always been simple: support local sport, keep business in Tasmania, and help people find equipment that actually suits their needs and lifestyle.

And after more than 30 years in the biz, they’ve done exactly that.

A One‑Stop Fitness Shop

Health & Leisure’s Hobart showroom isn’t just for gym junkies although they’ve got them covered too. It’s home to the largest range of gym equipment in Tassie, from squat racks, kettlebells, and dumbbells to treadmills, exercise bikes, rowing machines, cross trainers, and recovery tools.

But what surprises many first‑time visitors is just how much non‑gym fun is packed inside. Pool tables, foosball, air hockey, darts, trampolines, and kids’ sporting equipment make it a go-to for families, schools, and clubs (and bars!) looking to get everyone moving without it feeling like exercise.

If you play it, chances are Health & Leisure supply it.

From Backyard Gyms to Big-Time Fit-Outs

You’ll find Health & Leisure equipment across Hobart and the state, supplying big names like Zap Fitness, Fitzone 24/7, and hotel gyms at places like The Tasman.

“One of the biggest was fitting out a gym on an Antarctic icebreaker,” says Sonny. “That was pretty cool.”

Yep Hobart fitness, heading south to the ice!

Sonny is a familiar face to many locals. After moving from Sri Lanka, where he worked in banking, he joined Health & Leisure in 2019 as a service technician and quickly became a key part of the business. Now manager, Sonny has learned the tricks of the trade and loves helping customers find what suits their needs.

Once you buy from Health & Leisure, Sonny is the guy who makes sure everything keeps running smoothly.

“We help with warranties, servicing, repairs we even come out and build the equipment,” he says. “I call them customers for life.”

It’s that level of support that keeps people coming back and recommending them to friends.

Try It First, Commit Later

Health & Leisure understands that fitness looks different for everyone. Busy parents, rising petrol prices, or just the intimidation of getting started can all be barriers.

That’s why they offer hire‑to‑buy options for treadmills, bikes, rowers, and cross-trainers.

Customers can try equipment at home for a few months, then choose to buy with hire fees deducted from the purchase price or return it, no pressure.

From First Timers to Olympians

Health & Leisure works with everyone from people just starting their fitness journey to elite athletes, including Olympic runner Jake Despard, AFL draftee Sam Siggins, and local footy legends.

They also have strong ties with local football clubs, boxing, karate, and judo clubs, and proudly support Tasmanian athletes whenever they can including one of their own staff heading to the Commonwealth Games.

“We take the time to understand people’s goals,” Sonny says. “Fitness can be intimidating. We want it to feel achievable.”

Built the Hobart Way

After three decades, Health & Leisure’s success comes down to doing things the Hobart way: local knowledge, honest advice, and strong community connection.

From backyard gyms to commercial fit‑outs, Health & Leisure has helped generations of Hobartians move, play, and train and they’re not slowing down.
